Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR) Cables are widely used for electrical power transmission over long distances, making them ideal for long overhead line spans. They are also used as messengers for supporting overhead electrical cables.

Construction

ACSR conductors are formed by several wires of aluminum and galvanized steel, stranded in concentric layers. The wire or wires which form the core are made of galvanized steel and the external layer or layers are of aluminum. Galvanized steel core normally consists of 1, 7 or 19 wires. The diameters of steel and aluminum wires can be the same or different.
By varying the relative proportions of aluminum and steel, the required characteristics for any particular application can be achieved. A higher ultimate tensile strength can be obtained by increasing steel content, and a higher current carrying capacity by increasing aluminum content.

Corrosion Protection
A coating of non-oxidizing grease is normally applied to the steel cores of all conductors, in addition to the protection offered by the galvanizing of the steel wires. One or more layers of the aluminum wires can, if required, be supplied partially or fully greased. Complete freedom from contamination by other metals is ensured during the entire manufacturing process.
