Walk onto any construction site, factory floor, or outdoor event stage, and you’ll see thick, black, incredibly flexible cables snaking across the ground, powering air compressors, tower cranes, and welding machines. Nine times out of ten, that’s a YC cable.

Today, we’re looking at the heavy-duty legend of the cable world: the YC Heavy-Duty General Purpose Rubber Sheathed Flexible Cable.

1. What Does YC Actually Mean?

The Chinese GB nomenclature for rubber cables is beautifully simple:

  • Y​ = (Rubber Insulation)
  • C​ = Heavy Duty / Chóngxíng)
  • (For context: YQ = Light Duty, YZ = Medium Duty)

Unlike PVC cables (like YJV or BV) which feel like hard plastic, YC is soft, springy, and shock-absorbing. It’s built to be dragged, stepped on, and coiled up every day.

2. Anatomy of a YC Cable

A true YC cable has a distinct sandwich structure:

  1. Conductor:​ High-purity Oxygen-Free Copper​ strands (Class 5 flexibility). It’s multi-stranded and stays soft even after thousands of bends.
  2. Insulation:Natural Rubber​ (or high-grade synthetic rubber). This is what gives it elasticity and electrical safety.
  3. Filler:​ A heavy rubber filler that makes the cable perfectly round and solid.
  4. Outer Sheath:Thick Rubber. It’s weather-resistant, wear-resistant, and provides a firm grip.

The "Real vs. Fake" Truth:

As the original text warns—and any veteran electrician knows—the market is flooded with counterfeits.

  • The Premium Standard:​ The insulation and sheath should be made of 100% natural rubber. It smells like rubber, bends like a tire, and ages slowly.
  • The Market Reality:​ Most cheap YC cables on the market use recycled rubber or plastic blends. They feel greasy, stiffen in the cold, and crack in the sun within a season. If your "YC" cable feels light and plasticky, it’s not a real YC.

3. Where is YC Used? (The Mobile Power Hero)

YC is designed for movable equipment. If the machine moves, it needs YC.

  • Construction Sites:​ Temporary power distribution, cutting machines, concrete vibrators.
  • Household/Industrial:​ Power tools (angle grinders, drills), portable motors.

Key Strength:​ It can handle significant mechanical external force. You can run it across a workshop floor with forklifts driving near it (not over repeatedly), and it won't burst like a PVC conduit would.

4. The Temperature Catch (Use with Caution)

There is one major limitation engineers must respect: Heat.

  • Compare this to YJV (90°C) or XLPE (90°C).

Why does this matter? Rubber ages and melts faster than XLPE. 6. Specs & Configurations

YC cables are almost always multi-core (you need Live + Neutral + Earth for tools).

  • Cores:​ 2-core, 3-core, 4-core, 5-core.

Since quality varies wildly, here is how site managers spot-check YC cables:

  1. The Bend Test:​ Bend it sharply. Good rubber stays elastic and white creases slightly; bad rubber feels like plastic and might fracture.
  2. The Weight:​ Real rubber is dense. A cheap PVC-blend YC is noticeably lighter.
  3. The Smell:​ Real natural rubber has a distinct "tire" smell. Recycled plastic/rubber smells like burnt chemicals or has no smell.

Summary

Use YC when the cable moves. Use YJV when the cable stays.

For temporary site power, mobile machinery, and harsh outdoor environments where PVC would shatter or kink, YC remains the undisputed king. Just make sure you’re buying the real rubber, not the "rubber-flavored" plastic imitations.
