If you’ve ever walked into a hardware store for a renovation project, you’ve likely seen those flat, white cables that look like two wires fused together inside a single outer jacket. In the electrical world, we call this a Sheathed Cable .

For many electricians, sheathed cables are the go-to choice for surface wiring. But what exactly makes a cable a "sheathed" cable, and how do you tell the difference between the round ones and the flat ones? Let’s break it down.

What is a Sheathed Cable?

At its core, a sheathed cable is a wire (or a group of wires) that has two layers of protection​ instead of one.

  1. The Inner Layer:​ Each conductor has its own standard insulation (usually PVC).
  2. The Outer Layer:​ A thick, unified protective sheath​ (also PVC) wraps around the entire bundle.

Think of it as a group of people wearing individual raincoats, and then all stepping under one big shared umbrella. That umbrella is the sheath.

Why use it?​ Safety and durability. The outer sheath provides mechanical protection against abrasion, moisture, and minor impacts. It also keeps the cores neatly bundled together, preventing them from snagging or tangling during installation.

The Most Common Types You’ll Meet

In the Chinese GB standard and general Asian markets, you’ll mainly encounter these four codes:

  • BVV (Round, Hard):​ Multiple solid copper cores (BV wires) inside a round PVC sheath. Rigid and tough. Used for fixed outdoor/indoor power lines.
  • BVVB (Flat, Hard):​ The most recognizable "flat white wire." Two or three BV​ cores sitting side-by-side inside a flat PVC jacket. This is the undisputed king of surface-mounted home wiring in China.
  • RVV (Round, Soft):​ Soft-stranded cores (RV wires) inside a round sheath. The standard for power cords (appliances, extension reels).
  • RVVB (Flat, Soft):​ Soft cores inside a flat sheath. Used for flexible flat cords (e.g., some desk lamps or light strips).

Round vs. Flat: The Shape Matters

Don't just look at the letters; look at the cross-section:

  • Round Sheath (RVV / BVV):​ Usually contains multi-core​ (3 cores, 4 cores, 5 cores). The round shape makes it aerodynamic for pulling through long conduits, and it handles multi-phase power well.
  • Flat Sheath (BVVB / RVVB):​ Usually 2-core or 3-core. Because it’s flat, it hugs the wall beautifully. When you nail plastic clips to the wall to secure the wire, the flat bottom sits flush against the surface. No wobbling, no twisting.

Classic Scenario: Why is BVVB everywhere in renovations?

In many residential projects—especially in older buildings, workshops, or rural areas where chiseling concrete walls for conduits is too messy—electricians use BVVB​ for surface wiring.

  1. It’s flat, so it clips neatly to the wall skirting.
  2. It has a tough outer skin, so you don’t necessarily need a rigid plastic pipe (conduit) to protect it from daily bumps.
  3. It contains Live + Neutral​ (and sometimes Earth) together, meaning one single pull gives you a complete circuit.

Safety Note for Engineers

While sheathed cables are safer than bare single wires in open-air installs, remember: the sheath is not armor.

  • It protects against scratches and humidity, but not crushing forces or rodent bites (unless rodent-resistant compound is specified).
  • For underground or outdoor exposed runs in harsh environments, you still need a cable with an Armored layer (e.g., VV22 or YJV22).
